Over the last few years natural soap has been showing up all over the place and you have probably been asking yourself… “why should I switch to natural soap?” “Is it better for my skin?”
I can tell you from my experience, and from what I hear from everyone who has tried natural soap… the answer is a resounding YES it is better.
For years now I have been using natural soap and there is no going back for me and my family. I have naturally dry skin and the nourishment that I get from our natural soap has been a game changer. My daughters who suffer from eczema have seen that their skin is less irritated when they have made the switch to natural soap.
What is Natural Soap?
It is just as the name suggests. Natural soap is a soap that is made from using ingredients found in nature NOT in a lab. In the list of my reasons for making the switch you will see what the benefits are in comparison to these soaps that we find in most stores today.
Reasons to Make the Switch to Natural Soap
Reason #1-
Commercial soaps are not true soaps. Have you ever noticed that they don’t use the word soap in their name? The commercial bars are usually labeled as “cleansing bars”, “beauty bars”, “body wash” etc. These commercial cleansers (both liquid and solid) are actually detergents that have synthetic foam boosters and lathering agents that are harsh and drying to the skin. Many people think they have sensitive skin and must use only sensitive products but many times the cleanser they are using is causing the problem.
As a former purchaser of these kinds of products, I can say that the marketing is enticing. These soaps smell amazing and create great lather and suds which we all love, but once I learned what is in these so-called soaps, it left little to be desired.
Reason # 2 -
Natural soaps are very moisturizing to the skin because they retain the natural glycerin that occurs in the production process of making soap. Glycerin is a humectant which draws moisture from the environment to your skin which makes it an excellent moisturizer. Because natural soaps retain the glycerin, your skin will look healthier and feel more moisturized. Commercial cleansers that you usually find on the shelves remove the glycerin so that they will have a longer shelf life and they put the glycerin in other skincare products like lotions and creams instead of leaving it in the soap to benefit your skin. Soap without glycerin can lead to dry, ashy, and itchy skin.

Reason# 3 -
Natural soaps have better ingredients. Commercial cleansers are mass produced and they often use cheap synthetic ingredients as substitutes in their products to have a greater profit margin. These synthetic products are not only drying to your skin, but many times they can have a negative impact on bodily systems, and they are known to regularly contain parabens, sulphates, and triclosan. These substances are thought to trigger allergies, influence your hormone levels, and increase the risk of cancer.
Natural soap is made of skin-loving oils and butters that are rich in vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. Our bodies need this nourishment to remain healthy. Natural soaps use ingredients like Shea butter which adds to the creaminess and moisture of soap, coconut oil which helps contribute to the large fluffy lather in soap, and olive oil which is great for sensitive skin. The recipes that soap artisans use are designed to be healthy and nourish your skin.
Natural soaps are scented with essential oils which also provide aromatherapeutic benefits to each bar giving you that spa-like experience in the shower. Essential oils also provide valuable benefits like their antibacterial, antiviral and calming properties. Synthetic fragrances are made up of a lot of ingredients which are not disclosed because it is not FDA required. These fragrances contain phthalates and other harmful ingredients to our bodies and the environment.
Natural soap is naturally colored. Natural soap is colored using natural botanicals, clays, teas, juices and spices and the like, not by using synthetic colorants like lab colors and soap dyes which are not considered skin safe and pose health risks. When it comes to adding colors, this is where some soap artisans are divided. Some soap artisans use mineral pigments like oxides and ultramarines and micas that are not "natural" but, they are deemed safe and they are safer than the natural counterpart which can contain lead, mercury, arsenic.
Reason# 4 -
Natural soaps are made in small batches. This means the soap artisan is able to give attention to the soap that they make and care about the quality of the ingredients they use. Natural soap tends to be higher in cost than those on the store shelves, but as the saying goes “ you get what you pay for”. You may save money when you consider the amount of money saved from buying extra lotions and creams needed to combat the drying effects of commercial brands.
At CU we make our soaps the way natural soap should be. As you may know, your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it has the most contact with the outside world. We are subject to many toxins daily from our environment, so it is important to do what we can to protect our skin. The things we use to cleanse and reduce the effects of exposure on our skin should be very important to us.
As we have stated on our site:
“We believe what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in your body. After all, our bodies are temples and should be treated as such. That is why our products are handcrafted in small batches with premium all-natural plant-based ingredients, natural colorants, essential oil, and natural fragrances to ensure that you are getting the best that we can offer. Our products are designed to cleanse and nourish the skin and are free from detergents, phthalates, and all other harmful ingredients."
